SUMMER SESSION VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

Check out the position descriptions below to learn more about future volunteer opportunities at GRCB summer sessions.

BAND MANAGER

No Musical Experience Necessary! This position is our equivalent to a counselor, and is one of the most rewarding jobs for volunteers at GRCB.  You will serve as a positive mentor for your assigned band of youth with a Band Coach. During the day you must make sure they are where they need to be at all times and attend the end of day staff meeting each day. Band Managers with musical experience may also assist coaches in helping youth with their instruments throughout the day and during band practice. This position may be combined with support crew for a full day of volunteering! (Time Commitment: Monday 7:30am-6:00pm, Tuesday-Friday 11:30am-6:00pm, Saturday Showcase)

INSTRUMENT INSTRUCTOR

Our youth possess a varying range of age and skill level, and many have never touched a musical instrument in their lives. Now it’s time to teach them what you know! You will do some collaborative large-group teaching, as well as small-group sessions (generally 3-5 students per teacher.)  You will also meet with our Musical Curriculum Director and your fellow instrument instructors at least once before orientation to work out your curriculum and what style and level of experience each instructor is comfortable teaching. Previous teaching experience is not required. This position combines well with band coach, manager, or workshop leader for a full day of volunteering! (Time Commitment: Sunday Mandatory Volunteer Orientation, Monday 7:30am-1:00pm, Tuesday-Friday 8:00am-12:30pm, Saturday Showcase)

LEAD INSTRUMENT INSTRUCTOR

Lead Instrument Instructors serve as the point person and coordinator of their assigned instrument group. Lead Instructors facilitate the pre-session meet up and communications prior to the session. They teach along with their fellow instructors and help organize the materials provided from past GRCB sessions. LEAD Instructors must meet the following requirements to apply:

-Must have at least 1 year teaching experience within your selected Instrument or have taught a basic skill level of your particular instrument for at least 2 years.
-Have previously volunteered as an Instrument Instructor for Girls Rock Summer Sessions or Ladies Rock Camp
-Have strong lesson planning and organized preparation within your instructor group
-Must have the ability to develop curriculum to meet all participants at their skill level and help them prepare for their band practices leading up to Showcase time
-Willingness to periodically check in with your fellow instructors during sessions

This position pairs well with band coach, support crew or workshop leader for a full day of volunteering at GRCB. (Time Commitment: Mandatory Sunday Orientation, Monday 7:30am-1:00pm, Tuesday-Friday 8:00am-12:30pm, Saturday Showcase)

BAND COACH

Must have basic knowledge of song writing, knowledge of at least two instruments and knowledge of “practice space set-up.” Band coaches are assigned a band with a band manager and will work with one band all week! During the week, you will help your band prepare a song for the Showcase and be a positive mentor. You will help the youth during band selection on the first day and assist them each day in learning how to play as a group, both musically and interpersonally. This position combines well with instrument instructor for a full day of volunteering! (Time Commitment: Sunday Mandatory Volunteer Orientation, Monday 7:30am-6:00pm, Tuesday-Friday 11:30am-6:00pm, Saturday Showcase)

SUPPORT CREW

No musical experience necessary! This is an essential role in making GRCB a smooth sailing ship! We have divided the Support Crew into three separate crews for each session: Food Crew, Gear Crew, and Site Crew. Each crew is responsible for a different set of tasks throughout the week. You may request a crew or be placed by a coordinator in a crew where help is needed most.

Site Crew – You will help make the week run smoothly by working with all workshop leaders to make sure they have the supplies and support that they need! You will also be creating organizational systems to make sure everything is easy to find and distribute. You will also help keep the building clean and organized throughout the day.

Gear Crew – You will work with the Keeper of the Gear to ensure everyone has the gear they need! Throughout the week you will be as a roadie for the Bands, help move gear for instrument instruction, and set up for workshops and bands!

Food Crew – We need your help to make sure everything runs smooth as butter! This position includes setting up and breaking down food/drinks throughout the day. People get cranky when they are hungry and you will be making sure everyone is fed and HAPPY!!

The Support Crew position may be combined with band manager or workshop leader! Full day support crew appreciated! (Flexible Commitment: Sunday Mandatory Volunteer Orientation, Full Day Monday 7:30am-6:00pm, Tuesday-Friday 8:00am-6:00pm / 1st Shift Monday 7:30-1:00, Tuesday-Friday 8:00am-12:30pm / 2nd Shift Monday 12:00-6:00, Tuesday-Friday 11:30-6:00)

We are hoping to engage volunteers who can lead workshops such as: Songwriting, Silk-Screening, Self Defense, Electronics, Spoken Word Workshop, Electronic Music Workshop, Combatting Relational Aggression and Bullying, Intersectional Feminism, Women in Rock History, and Zine Making. We are also interested in proposals for workshops that we have not offered before but would align with our mission and enhance the experience at GRCB.

Workshop leaders are responsible for developing a one and a half-hour session on their topic and teaching it 1-2 times to a group of 30-35 participants. Workshop leaders need to meet with the Program Director prior to the session. Workshops often involve team-teaching.

GRCB NURSE

We are in need of a qualified volunteer nurse for each of our summer sessions to make sure everyone is safe during the week! While we would prefer to have a consistent person throughout each week, we understand that volunteering your time is not always easy and could work to accommodate part time schedules!
