GRCB Summer Interns

GRCB will not be holding in-person sessions during the summer of 2021 due to health and safety concerns but… we have launched a new Youth Leadership Program!

Youth Activism Project is an opportunity for girls and youth with marginalized gender identities, ages 13-17, to spend the summer deepening their leadership skills and working together to challenge the status quo. GRCB Youth Leaders meet virtually twice a week for three weeks this summer. Learn more and apply today >>

GRCB Summer Session Intern Information:

Intern positions at GRCB are for those who are 16-18 years old, have previously participated in GRCB Summer Sessions for two or more summers, demonstrate exceptional maturity and commitment to the mission of GRCB, and are interested in taking on a leadership role within the GRCB community.

If you have not previously participated in GRCB programs you are still welcome to apply. We require that you supply a reference and will contact you for a phone interview.

During the session, interns serve as instrument instructors, support GRCB staff and volunteers, attend workshops and panels, and work as a team to write and lead their own workshop. Most importantly, they are part of the volunteer staff during the session and serve as role models and mentors for the participants.

Interns will not receive instrument instruction, but will be in the GRCB Intern Band. The Intern Band will play the GRCB theme song at afternoon assembly each afternoon, have time to write a song and practice at the end of each day, and will be the opening act at the Showcase.

It is important to be able to follow the direction of coordinators and staff, be willing to learn how to set up each practice space, move equipment safely and efficiently, and communicate and collaborate with adult volunteers.

Assistant Instrument Instructor:
Interns need to check in with their other Instrument Instructors every morning when they arrive. Our youth possess a varying range of age and skill level, and many have never touched a musical instrument in their lives. Now it’s time to teach them what you know. You will work with the Volunteer Instrument Instructors to do some collaborative large-group teaching, as well as small-group sessions (generally 3-5 students per teacher).

Intern Learning:
The intern group attend a variety of workshops and panels that take GRCB programming to the next level. These opportunities are only available to GRCB interns.

Workshop Leader:
Interns work together to write and create an original workshop for 11 and 12 year old youth. This requires research, collaboration, and willingness to share your knowledge and experience. The intern workshop runs twice on Thursday afternoon. Interns will be expected to present the learning youth do in their workshop to the GRCB community at the showcase on Saturday.

GRCB Volunteer Support:
This is an essential role in making GRCB a smooth sailing ship!  Throughout the week, the Interns will be called upon to help with a wide variety of activities that include but are not limited to: skits, punk rock aerobics, checking youth in/out, gear maintenance, moving gear, practice space set up, Showcase Dress Rehearsal assistance, and other tasks that help everyone have a great day at GRCB!

Time Requirements:
Prior to the session, interns must contribute to building the curriculum for their assigned instrument group. This means that they must be in communication with the other instrument instructors via email and attend in person meetings leading up to the session. Additionally, we have a mandatory Instrument Instructor Orientation in June.
